Western MA Chess Association

Greetings fellow chess-player,

Thanks for taking the time to read about the latest fund-raising effort for the Western Massachusetts Chess Association. WMCA, a not-for-profit, 501(c7) organization has been promoting chess, organizing tournaments and supporting the chess clubs and players who reside in the western half of the state since the 1940’s! Just in case you hadn’t heard, WMCA will be hosting a fundraiser in cooperation with the Papa Gino’s restaurant chain on Tuesday, October 14th at the Papa Gino’s location at 110 King Street in Northampton, MA. Twenty per cent(!) of food purchases made that evening between 6 PM and 9 PM will be donated to WMCA!

This will be a totally social event, which I encourage you to attend with your wives and children to enjoy fellowship and fun for weeknight out!

WMCA will also be sponsoring an ongoing raffle at this event.

Raffle tickets will be on sale in advance and at the event for $1.00!! You do not need to be present to win!! Advanced purchases are welcomed!! Participants can win more than once, as raffle numbers will be drawn throughout the evening for chess books and software, as well as WMCA promotional items (t-shirts , bumper stickers, etc.). The grand prize offering of the evening will be a donated first edition hard cover issue of Bobby Fischer’s legendary book, “My 60 Memorable Games” (recently offered for sale on eBay for $145!).

Of course, we’ll play some chess… meet the public… talk about WMCA and the history of chess in western Massachusetts.

Anyone looking to donate items (chess-related or not) of good quality to be raffled off that evening are encouraged to either contact myself or any other WMCA board member, or simply show up on Tuesday night, Oct. 14th to help support a worthy cause.

Our long-term vision for WMCA is to continue to offer high quality tournaments for western Mass. residents, with bigger and better prize funds, at increasingly better locations. Monies donated to the organization allow us to continue to do so… to support the game of chess in western Massachusetts at both an adult and scholastic level, and honor the memories and efforts of so many legendary chess figures and promoters from here in western Mass.

Please join us, even for a brief “hello” at Papa Gino’s in Northampton on Tuesday evening, October 14th anytime from 6:00 to 9:00 PM!!

Best wishes,
Frank D. Kolasinski, President
Western Massachusetts Chess Association

Also to be raffled off:
Fritz 10 software, Canon Faxphone B60 Fax machine, Chronos digital chess clock

Delilah on the TODAY show tomorrow!

Dear Loyal Listener,

Woo woo woo! Tomorrow morning I get to be on the TODAY show!!! As the Pointer Sisters would sing, “I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it… ” I’ll be on with Kathy Lee and Hoda talking about my new book, “Love Matters” so be sure to tune in or set your television to record the program. You won’t want to miss it as I speak with people who contributed their amazing stories to my book!

I have been counting down the days to my book release… and the wait is finally over. Today, you will find “Love Matters” in bookstores everywhere, and I hope you will find it to be the perfect extension of my evening radio show.

The stories in my book are true accounts of love in its many forms, and I feel blessed that I can finally share them with you in a format you can cherish forever or pass along to someone you love. Just as I do on air, I have taken each story and paired it with a popular love song, because I think music is a powerful reflection of what is in our hearts.

Make time to pick up your copy of “Love Matters” because I truly believe love is what matters most, and love is all that remains, and the stories in my book reaffirm this truth.

God bless you,
Delilah

Point Hope (http://www.pointhope.org/)

Point Hope is an organization that aspires to be the voice for forgotten children. One does not have to look farther than the end of their block, or the edge of their town, to find more than one forgotten child. Children brought into this world and immediately put into a state’s foster care program are prime examples. Other children are brought into this world by well-meaning parents who lose their way and their confidence to care for a child, and give up all hope of preparing the child for the years ahead. Outside of the United States, the number of children born into underdeveloped nations where resources and money are scarce, who are in desperate need of nutrition and education, are equally in need of a voice. Each example provides enough reason for Point Hope to exist as a beacon of caring and leadership for individuals who want to help as many children as possible realize their full potential. Point Hope’s mission is to provide long-lasting solutions that will benefit the forgotten children, and to be their voice, saying “Don’t forget about me; I am a person too.”

World Mind Sports Update

World Mind Sports games Chess event hit by the global financial crisis
Chess at the WMSG is still on, but less players are expected in Beijing

News was in the air since last Friday, but the official confirmation came to the Chessdom email on Monday afternoon. The Chess teams for the World Mind Sports Games were supposed to have two sponsors for air travel – Air China and a Russian company. The Chinese have fulfilled their part and some federations have received their tickets. The other sponsor has delayed the payment of the money, so FIDE cannot guarantee at this point that the other federations, which pay their tickets, will actually be refunded.

Earlier this summer FIDE officials have explained to IMSA (International Mind Sports Association, the official governing body of the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing 2008) that the proximity of the event with the Chess Olympiad in Dresden creates financial difficulties for the federations. Both organizations agreed that sponsorship for the participants is necessary and actions were taken, but situation changed rapidly last week. The Russian sponsor has stated that they cannot provide the requested financing in the timeline that was initially agreed. The official explanation from the sponsor is “problems in the banking system” and “the global financial crisis”. They have promised to release the money in November, when situation gets better.

FIDE, however, has taken quick action and has informed all the participants about the current situation. Now it is up to the federations if they send the players and cover their costs. If the sponsor gives the money, they will be reimbursed, but that cannot be guaranteed.
The present situation

Even though the present situation is difficult, the Chess event will still take place. The host from China have arranged free accommodation to all participants. Air China has already provided 250 free tickets (about 1/3 of the participants) from specific locations.

The only question standing now is how many players will show up at the event. The initially published official list has changed only a few days ago. Veselin Topalov, the top seeded in the men event, had to withdraw due to force major reasons not connected to the current situation. The lists will be headed by Wang Yue and Yifan Hou, but it is unclear how many of the players will show up.

Obama’s Knights

The Obama for America campaign sent an email to Jan Jones for some “Get Creative” help. The “Your Move” caption is a call to do something for Obama for America or at least get involved. It should be noted that Senator Obama did support some chess events in Chicago and his wife Michelle was quoted that her father taught her chess and she played quite a bit growing up.

Special thanks to Jan Jones for sending this to me!

To be fair and balance, if anyone would like to create something for Senator McCain, I would be happy to post it as well.

Chess support system

I would like to thank Dr. Alexey Root and members of the UTD chess team (BAYARAA ZORIGT, KARINA VAZIROVA, ALEXEY W ROOT, HELENE ROMAKIN, ALEJANDRO RAMIREZ, JACEK STOPA, etc.) for supporting and competing the SPICE Cup Open and the Texas Women’s Championship.

Dr. Root drove some of the players around 6 hours to come to Lubbock from Dallas to play in these events. UTD has a fantastic chess program and we hope to be able to follow their tradition of chess excellence.

Boy suspended over anti-Obama tshirt
by Bethany Sanders
Sep 25th 2008 2:00PM

With only 40 days left until the 2008 Presidential election, there’s no doubt that things are heating up. As the candidates battle it out on the main stage, conversations at home are bound to turn to politics. Parents, of course, have a huge influence over a child’s developing political leanings. And parents who feel strongly about an issue are sure to pass those feelings on to their kids.

Whether or not it was his due to his parents’ influence, a Colorado boy is pretty certain that, if he was of voting age, he wouldn’t be casting his vote for Barack Obama. The boy wore a handmade t-shirt to school that declared, “Obama: A Terrorist’s Best Friend.” The school gave the boy three choices — change his clothes, turn the shirt inside out, or get suspended. The boy chose suspension, and now his family plans to sue. Hooo, boy.

The family is citing First Amendment rights, of course, while the school district says it has a right to ban any clothing that interferes with learning. I think that the school district did the right thing. The shirt was inflammatory, and they gave the boy several options to avoid suspension. But I’m sure there are others who think this is a gross violation of this boy’s rights.

10th anniversary of Chess City

10th Anniversary of “Chess City” Elista

Tuesday, 30 September 2008

Dear Elista, Congratulations!

When Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was first elected the FIDE President in 1995, almost nobody in the chess world (other than the Russian chess circle) knew anything about Kirsan and where he came from. Although he hosted the world championship match between Karpov and Kamsky in 1996, still very few people knew anything about the place he lives and where this place is situated on the map.

However, two years later, almost 2,000 people found their way to Elista, the capital of the Russian Republic of Kalmykia. In the steppes was built the world’s first ever “chess city” which housed the foreign visitors who witnessed how a small city with a small population provided one of the best hospitality to the world chess community. I am sure the visitors today still cherish the warm hospitality of Kirsan’s citizens.

Today, the Elistians celebrate the 10th Anniversary of “Chess City”. Elista has certainly earned its place on the world chess map. Congratulations to all our dear Elistian friends

Kasparov’s move

Grandmaster makes a move on the Kremlin
September 30, 2008

Garry Kasparov’s greatest opponent is Russian political apathy, says viv groskop

When 5,000 Russians gathered in St Petersburg at the weekend to protest against Putin’s presidency, one of the leaders of the ‘March of the Discontented’ was a man we are more used to seeing glaring across a chessboard – grandmaster Garry Kasparov.

Famous for his chess battles with Anatoly Karpov in the 1980s, Kasparov retired from the game in 2005 and is now pitting himself against Putin as an increasingly visible dissident.

Saturday’s protest – during which 100 were arrested – marked the fact that Russia’s next general election is only a year away. According to the constitution, Putin should be stepping down then. But Kasparov and his supporters are concerned the President will attempt – illegally – to stand for a third term.

Usually Russia’s opposition parties are unable to find common ground, but on this issue they rallied: representatives from left and right marched on Saturday, including from the National Bolshevik Party and Yabloko, the social-liberal party.

If this movement could find a figurehead in Kasparov, it might make some gains. But though the chess master is a household name, admired for his steely determination, few young Russians recall his heyday. “Kasparov’s problem,” a St Petersburg journalist tells me, “is that no-one under the age of 30 really knows who he is.”

Kasparov’s first match in the big league in 1985 was the longest in history, eventually broken off by adjudicators after 48 games when Anatoly Karpov began to show signs of physical and emotional strain. Kasparov is not a man who suffers fools gladly. As one critic puts it, he is the genius whom “no one would dare call a demented control freak to his face.”

A Gorbachev return?

Mikhail Gorbachev returns to politics

September 30, 2008

In a move that will delight many old Cold War warriors, but more importantly critics of Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev (pictured) is to return to Russian politics. The author of Glasnost and Perestroika, who is now 77, has announced that he and business partner Alexander Lebedev, a former ex-KGB officer turned billionaire banker, are forming a political party to contest parliamentary elections in 2011.

While Gorbachev has championed freedom of speech, he has, thus far, conspicuously avoided direct criticism of the macho Russian prime minister. However, those expecting tanks on the lawn of the Kremlin and a challenge to Putin’s authoritarian style of politics will probably be disappointed. Lebedev, 48, says his party, called the Independent Democratic Party of Russia, will be the “polite” opposition, eschewing the tactics of former chess champion Garry Kasparov’s The Other Russia movement, which was banned from contesting last year’s parliamentary election.

But he also insisted that his party would not be a toothless cipher and would be prepared to criticise Putin when necessary. Said Lebedev: “Even if I’m polite and politically correct, it’s absolutely clear that there are things on which we disagree.”

Polgar sisters reunite for a special occasion

2nd Aquaprofit-Polgár Chess Day – within the frameworks of the renaissance year
The Polgár sisters are playing on 100 boards again

Press Release

http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/7-commissions/3330-press-release-2nd-aquaprofit-polgar-chess-day

Budapest, 29th September. 2008

By favour of the Aquaprofit Co. there will be a chess festival with the Polgár sisters this year as well. This event will take place in an extraordinary beautiful place: in the Blue and the Glass Hall of the Palace of Arts on the 11th of October. Zsuzsa and Zsófi, who live abroad will travel home only for the sake of the chess day, so that they together with Judit, who lives in Hungary can play against their opponents. In the event, being held within the frameworks of the “Renaissance year”, actors, journalists, media people, professional and amateur chess players and young talents will sit at the tables. In addition the organizers are planning to make a great announcement as well.

The Aquaprofit Co. is a major sponsor of the Hungarian chess life for years; it is the name giving sponsor of the chess team of Nagykanizsa, which is one of the strongest chess teams in Hungary. Last year the management hired Judit Polgár to bring her back to the circulation of the domestic chess life. Besides it organized the successful Aquaprofit-Polgár chess day, this way, after ten years the world famous sisters played together again in Hungary The Aquaprofit Co. would like to continue this tradition this year as well: the 2nd Aquaprofit-Polgár Chess day will be held in the Palace of Arts at 3 pm on the 11th of October 2008.

Judit, who lives in Hungary, Zsuzsa, who will come from Texas and Zsófi, who lives in Canada will play simultaneously against opponents on 45 boards (15 boards each) and new players will start after each game is finished. This way, according to the plans more than a hundred players will have the chance to play in the simultaneous games.

There is an enormous interest for the event. There are already more than two hundred entrants. One thing is sure: young talents, professional chess players, actors and journalists will sit at the tables.

The organizers are planning to make a great announcement as well at the opening of the event.

Aquaprofit Co.

Background information:

What have the Polgár sisters in common?

All three of them were Olympic champions twice representing Hungary. Playing in the same team with Ildikó Mádl they managed to break the hegemony of the soviet female chess players in Thessaloniki in 1988 and in Novi Sad in 1990 as well. All of the Polgár sisters are mothers of two. An interesting remark: out of their 6 children the first 5 are boys and only Judit’s second child is a girl. They hold shows and give interviews all around the world, where they proudly speak about their Hungarian origin and their childhood, which they spent in Budapest. The saying seems to be true: “The Polgár-sisters are equal with three foreign ministers”.

Zsuzsa Polgár

She is the only adult Hungarian chess world champion. She has played four times in chess Olympics, where (besides her individual medals) she won two gold medals and one silver medal for Hungary. She then helped the American team win the silver medal for the first time in the history of chess in 2004 in Calvia. She has an honorary doctorate degree from the Texas Tech University and she is the head of SPICE (Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence) of Texas Tech University. She lived in New York for more than ten years and moved to Texas last year to head SPICE. She may be the most famous and the most acknowledged person of the American chess by now, in addition to being a loyal representative of the Hungarian chess and Hungary as well.

Zsófia Polgár

She is a real artist. Her wonderful attack games and tactic solutions make her most beautiful winnings undying. In 1989 in Rome presenting the most valuable achievement ever, she had a performance of 2928. In this competition she won 8.5 points out of 9, in one section of the game she beat three Russian masters in a row. She and her family lived in Israel until the recent past, where she had been the leader of the Kasparov Chess Academy. They moved to Canada about a year ago because of her husband’s work. She plays more rarely these days, her “civilian” qualification is interior decorator.

Judit Polgár

She is the strongest female chess player ever. It is a total world record that she has been on the top of the female world rank for 28 times. (Kasparov has achieved this for only 23 times in his category). She is the most beloved participant of the world’s most relevant male competitions, which she earned not only because she achieved the 10thplace on the male world rank but she has also made lots of friends with her brave, non-opportunistic chess style. In spite of her young age she is a living chess legend. Last year she could celebrate the birthdays of Korchnoi and the Swiss Bank together with Karpov and Kasparov, chess legends similar to her. Judit by herself is a special category in the sports of the world, she is the most well-known Hungarian lady. She is an example of the fact that women can cope with men in all fields of life. However for most men it is better not to compete with Judit on the chess-board. She lives in Budapest, she was the “heroine” of the silver medal winning male chess team of the Chess Olympics of 2002, and she is the first player of the Aquaprofit chess team.

Aquaprofit Co.:

The Aquaprofit Technical, Consulting and Investment Company is one of the most competent firms in its field of business in Hungary. Tamás Nádasi, the president of the company has been the leader of the chess association of the town for 25 years.

No bailout!

House Fails to Pass Huge Bailout Deal
By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS ,
AP
posted: 19 MINUTES AGO

WASHINGTON (Sept. 29) – The House on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue package, ignoring urgent pleas from President Bush and bipartisan congressional leaders to quickly bail out the staggering financial industry.

Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was announced on the House floor.

When the critical vote was tallied, too few members of the House were willing to support the unpopular measure with elections just five weeks away. Ample no votes came from both the Democratic and Republican sides of the aisle.

Chess is a game for children

Dan Conradt — Chess is a game for children
9/29/2008 9:50:44 AM

I’m never going to be a threat to Bobby Fischer, but at least I’ve stopped calling them “the horse” and “the castle.”

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play chess. Based on my limited knowledge, the game seemed both intriguing and intimidating.

Years after making my first half-hearted attempt, I’m finally learning to play.

I’ve discovered that my opponent is ruthless.

At one time, I was interested enough in learning the game to buy a cheap chess set at the dime store. There were 32 black and white chessmen, a chess board the thickness of a cereal box and a sheet of instructions that explained in elementary terms how the pieces moved, the object of the game and when it was appropriate to say cool things like “checkmate.”

The first quasi-serious attempt to learn to play the game lasted less than half an hour. I set the game up on the kitchen table and tried to follow along with the instructions, which quickly made it clear that chess is not a game that lends itself to solitaire play.

So the pieces went back into the box, and the box went into the attic.

My interest was rekindled during my son’s back-to-school conference, when his second-grade teacher said her class would be learning to play chess.

I was surprised when, on the way home that night, Steven said, “I always wanted to know how to play chess.”

“Me, too,” I said. “And I’ve got a chess set at home.”

“Let’s play.”

So I pulled the game out of the attic and brushed off years of accumulated dust.

The chess board was showing the stress that comes from nearly three decades of temperature and humidity changes in a Minnesota attic, but the plastic chessmen were all there, along with an instruction sheet that had a 1979 copyright on the bottom.

I couldn’t help but think that I might be a threat to Bobby Fischer if I’d been serious about the game for the last 29 years.

We laid out the board at the kitchen table … I’d been through three kitchen tables since my first failed attempt to learn the game … and we played. We didn’t play fast, and we spent most of our time reading the directions to remind us how the players moved, but we played.

By the second game “the horse and the castle” had become “the knight and the rook.”

By the third game, we were playing with some strategy.

While I’ll never “let” Steven win, I didn’t see anything wrong with giving some helpful hints along the way:

“Are you sure you want to do that?”

“Why?” he asked.

“Look at where your king is, look at my players and remember how they move.”

He studied the board for a moment before a little light bulb went on, and he moved his knight back to its original position.

I don’t feel bound by the rule that says, “There are no do-overs once your finger leaves the piece,” but maybe I should: Two moves later Steven’s bishop swooped in from four squares away, and he plucked my king off the board.

“Can I do that?” he asked.

I didn’t have to look at the directions to tell me the answer: “Yes, you can.”

“Did I win?”

“Yes, you did.”

“Hey, Mom! I beat Dad in chess!”

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play pinochle.

The last round surge

Harikrishna wins last round, wins Spice Cup title
Sep 29th, 2008 By Sindh Today Category: India

Lubbock (Texas), Sep 29 (IANS) India’s Pentala Harikrishna won the Spice Cup chess with an exciting last-round win that not only got him into a four-way tie, but also earned him the title with the best tie-break score.

The 22-year-old Harikrishna, the former world junior champion and second highest rated Indian after Viswanathan Anand, was lying third before the final round. He fought till the very last and snatched a win against the Russian-born American Gregory Kaidanov, who is currently the most active chess coach in the United States.

It was a major win for Hari, who in 2004 won the world juniors and then in 2006, won the Chess960 title in Germany.

Interestingly, back in 1987 Kaidanov had scored his first major tournament win in Moscow by crushing the then upcoming Viswanathan Anand. Four years later Kaidanov left Russia for United States with his family.

Harikrishna took his tally to 5.5 points from nine rounds and was tied with Alexander Onischuk, Leonid Kritz and Varuzhan Akobian.

Akobian and Kritz were leading with five out of eight going into the last round, where they had to play each other. Their game ended in a draw but it was not a quick one.

Onischuk and Harikrishna, who were sharing third place, won their respective games with White pieces to join for a four-way tie.

Harikrishna had the best tiebreak score of 23.2 and was adjudged the winner. He received the Spice Cup put up by Susan Polgar (and a Swiss watch).

Round 9 results:

Onischuk beat Stefansson; Harikrishna beat Kaidanov; Eugene Perelshteyn beat Mikhalevski; Miton drew with Becerra; Akobian drew with Kritz.

Final Standings:

1-4. Harikrishna Pentala 2668 IND, Alexander Onischuk 2670 USA, Leonid Kritz 2610 GER and Varuzhan Akobian 2610 USA – 5.5
5. Julio Becerra 2598 USA – 5.0
6. Victor Mikhalevski 2592 ISR – 4.5
7. Eugene Perelshteyn 2555 USA – 4.0
8-9. Gregory Kaidanov 2605 USA and Kamil Miton 2580 POL – 3.5
10. Hannes Stefansson 2566 ISL – 2.5

The end of a wonderful event

The co-champions: GM Pentala, GM Kritz, and GM Akobian. I will add GM Onischuk’s picture tomorrow.

I would like to thank MonRoi, ICC, Chess Today, TWIC, Chess Life Online, Chessdom, Chessvibes, Chess Ninja, Chessville, and so many other media sources (both chess and general media) for covering this event.

I would also like to thank our many sponsors and supporters for making this event happen.

As I mentioned before, we are definitely shooting for at least category 16 or 17 next year, along with a B group, and a bigger and better SPICE Cup Open, Texas Women’s Championship, and SPICE Scholastic Cup.
