Filippov wins PGMA Cup via tiebreak

Uzbek rules PGMA Cup via tiebreak
The Philippine Star 10/01/2009 8:09 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan defeated Filipino IM Richard Bitoon in the eighth round and drew with top seed GM Mikhail Mchedlishvili of Georgia in the final round to rule the fourth President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Cup International Chess Championship at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall in Parañaque.

The third-seeded Filippov finished with a nine-round aggregate of 6.5 points on four wins and five draws then nipped four others – GMs Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam, Ehsan Ghaemmaghami of Iran, Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia and Gopal Nayanan of India – in the tiebreak to clinch the crown.

Truong Son, solo leader after the seventh round, drew with Mchedlishvili and Gagunashvili while Ghaemmaghami beat Filipino GM John Paul Gomez in the eighth round and GM Tigran Kotanjian of Armenia in the ninth to finish tied for first.

Gagunashvili beat GM Meng Kong Wong of Singapore and halved the point with Nguyen, while Nayanan drew with Kotanjian in the eighth round and trounced GM Darwin Laylo in the final round.

The five players, however, won $4,000 each out of the total prize fund of $40,000.

The million krone question

When will Magnus Carlsen break 2800?
By the end of 2009
First quarter of 2010
Second quarter of 2010
Let me call Magnus and ask him
pollcode.com free polls

A look back at an American phenom

Ray has clearly demonstrated to me that he is Grandmaster strength. He is extremely sharp tactically. He is a very good attacking player. He has nerve of steel. He is a fighter. He has excellent study habit. But most importantly, he has tremendous support from his devoted parents, just as with my sisters and me, Magnus, Fabiano, and Hikaru, etc.

Ray is an organizer’s dream player to invite. He will put on a great show each time.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ray will be a Grandmaster very shortly. I also have no doubt that Ray will reach the elite level soon. Here is a look back of a few pivotal games by Ray at the SPICE Cup.

In this game, Ray just kept on attacking until he got the result he wanted.

This was Ray’s only hiccup in the entire event. But to Vinay’s credit, he was so resourceful defending his position and striking back at the right moment.

For Iryna Zenyuk, it’s a lifestyle

Female chess player competes to be queen of kings
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
By Sara Bauknecht, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

For most people, chess is just a game.

For Iryna Zenyuk, it’s a lifestyle.

Most mornings, Ms. Zenyuk, 23, of Squirrel Hill, wakes up before 6:30 a.m. She spends two hours studying chess with a coach she works with via the Internet before heading off to the labs of Carnegie Mellon University to study renewable energy fuel cells as part of her doctoral program.

In the midst of her academic studies, Ms. Zenyuk also finds time to write about chess. She authors a column on tips for amateur players for chess.com.

All this training, studying and writing about chess have paid off. This week, Ms. Zenyuk, a Woman International Master according to chess’s Elo ranking scale, will compete in the Super Bowl of chess matches: the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship.

This tournament, running Saturday through Oct. 13 at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, brings the U.S. Chess Federation’s top 10 women players together. Ms. Zenyuk ranks eighth, and this is her fifth time competing in the national championships.

Here is the full story.

A blitz tournament broke out

So what did the players want to do after 9-10 days of chess competition? Play a blitz tournament, of course. And GM Akobian is trying to intimidate his young opponent by showing off some table push ups :)

Major upset in the making …

Once again, Stephanie Ballom, President of the Texas Tech Knight Raiders, is beating GM Akobian with her left hand behind her back. Of course we like to tease him because we care. He is a real good sport as usual.

‘Men get intimidated as I’m a chess player’

‘Men get intimidated as I’m a chess player’
30 September 2009, 12:00am IST

So what if she’s associated with a serious sport like chess? That hasn’t stopped the 23-year-old Tania Sachdev from chilling out with friends or Tania Sachdev keeping herself up to date with the latest fashion trends.

Just recently, when we caught up with her at a fashion event, she was seen flaunting a short dress with her hair stylishly done. “You know when I’m not playing chess, I’m doing this,” she said, pointing at her new dress.

And not just this! Back from the Women’s World Team Championships, where India was ranked seventh, the gal’s been chilling out quite a bit with her friends too! And although she loves hitting the dance floor, she thinks she has two left feet. “But nevertheless, I still dance a lot. In fact, I thought I should relax before I got back to the practice sessions again for the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam,” she says.

However, Tania is also looking forward to the games because she wants to discover Vietnam. “I’ve heard a lot about water puppetry there. And I want to check it out for myself,” Tania says.

So, with so much happening, doesn’t Tania get a lot of male attention? “Ah, where are they? No, I guess they get intimidated because I am a chess player. Moreover, I have a lot of time to do all that, right?” Absolutely, girlie!

Almasi enters the 2700 club
Report by Chessdom.com

Zoltan Almasi, the third strongest Hungarian grandmaster after Peter Leko and Judit Polgar, is having a fantastic home event at the Gyorgy Marx memorial. With victories against Gangualy and Acs (with black) and Safarli (with white), and only one draw against Georg Meier, Almasi is top of the table with 3,5/4.

Zoltan Almasi has been orbiting the 2700 club for quite a while. Since October 2001 he has been above 2650 on 21 occasions. His rating has not dropped under that level since April 2006 and he achieved his maximum in October 2007 – a rating of 2691.

Now after the 4th round of Gyorgy Marx memorial, GM Zoltan Almasi has a virtual rating of 2703 points and is the new member of the prestigious club.
