Breaking News: Interview with Mr. Morten Sand about Tromsø Olympiad

This is Mr. Morten Sand visiting SPICE and Texas Tech University last year at the 2009 SPICE Spring Invitational

Just two Chess Olympiad bids by FIDE deadline

Interview with Morten Sand – Tromsø delivers Norwegian bid for 41st Olympiad

On the last day of April, Morten Sand, the international advisor for the bid organizing committee, submitted an application to host the 41st Chess Olympiad on behalf of the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø. This act marked over three years of preparation by the group, which has combined chess and Olympic Winter Games organizers with experts from Norwegian business in an effort to bring the event to the city.

During this time Tromsø has gathered experience and goodwill through their Arctic Chess Challenge, and gathered political backing thanks to the national pride generated by the stunning results of teenager Magnus Carlsen. Norway’s bid has already secured the financial support of the country’s government, which also hopes that staging the event will spotlight the far north that they claim is a priority region for the future.

Sand, a former FIDE Vice President and legal advisor to FIDE, talked about the methodical campaign to try to land this prestigious event in northern Norway.

“I have to say that I am pleased to have just submitted the Tromsø bid in Athens. We are proud of the work we have done, and after three years of effort we believe we have a very strong bid for the chess Olympiad. A great deal of care has gone into the preparation, and we have all the necessary ingredients for a successful Olympiad.”

The Arctic Chess Challenge certainly seems to have charmed those who have made the trip to play there, but can a city like Tromsø really stage an event of Olympic scope?

“Absolutely! One of our arguments is that Tromsø is a ‘small large city’ – and a metropolis is not a necessity for a memorable Olympiad.

Tromsø has everything a big city can offer – if on a smaller scale – and with 10,000 university students out of a population of 75,000, it also has a lively pulse.”

“In August, which is the optimal time slot for the Tromsø bid, the weather is mild, and the city has typically ‘exotic’ Norwegian features – beautiful unspoiled natural scenery, and a diverse cultural setting, with a major hosting role to be played by the indigenous Sami. The region is also noted in Norway for its good-natured hospitality, so the public will be as welcoming as the organizers.”

“And the organization has full backing at every level – the City of Tromsø, the northern region and the national government. The Ministry of Sport and Culture has approved a grant of NOK 70 million – about EUR 8.8 million at the current exchange rate – which is an extremely reassuring vote of confidence. And since Norway has a majority government, this support is rock solid. A lot of people have done a lot of work to make this happen – we are ready!”

While the Norwegian application process has clearly been thorough and patient, the organizing team still faces a tough struggle to land the event, with a demanding political and diplomatic fight still ahead to secure enough support from FIDE nation members. Arguably, navigating FIDE politics may be the hardest part of the process, with this congress being a presidential election year as well?

“The FIDE election process and the bidding for the Olympiad are two completely different issues and should not be mixed. It is extremely important for Tromsø’s candidacy – and for me personally – to remain absolutely neutral when it comes to the presidential elections. This is only logical.”

“We want to host the Olympiad in 2014 regardless of the outcome of this year’s elections, and this requires a good, equal and untroubled relationship with all possible candidates. Taking sides would obviously be counter-productive for anyone involved with the Tromsø bid, and we are a closely knit team.”

Finally – coming this far is a real accomplishment for the Tromsø organization, but what kind of chance do you think the bid has for ultimate success?

“I think our chances are good. Only two bids were received within the deadline set by FIDE – Tromsø and Varna, Bulgaria. Since Varna has staged the Chess Olympiad before, in 1962, we think Tromsø should have excellent chances.

Interview – GM Jonathan Tisdall, for the Norwegian Chess Federation/Norsk Sjakkblad.

Tromsø officially bids for 2014 Chess Olympiad

Press release:

Norway submits bid for the 41st Chess Olympiad in 2014

Tromsø, April 30th 2010

The city of Tromsø, in cooperation with the Norwegian Chess Federation, has today submitted its official bid to be the host city of the 2014 Chess Olympiad. One of the world’s largest sporting events, the Olympiad hosts 1400 participants from 150 nations in a team competition spanning two weeks.

The Chess Olympiad is a biennal tournament to determine the best five-player open and women’s teams in the world. World Chess Federation FIDE organizes the event, selecting the host nation based on a bidding process. Tromsø’s application is the fruit of long-term preparations which began in 2006.

Government support

The Norwegian majority government has demonstrated its support by pledging financial backing of NOK 70 million/ € 8,8 million, granted by the Norwegian Minister of Sports and Culture. The bid has a total budget of NOK 119.3 million (€ 14,912,500) which will be financed through a combination of governmental support, regional funding and marketing income. The budget is structured according to a template for IOC bidding cities.

Organizational background

A bidding organizing committee formed of Olympic and chess expertise has developed the proposal. Mr. Henrik Andenæs, a business professional and former managing director of the Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee (17th Winter Olympics 1994) is chairman, Norwegian Chess Federation President Mr. Jøran Aulin-Jansson is vice-chairman, and attorney at law Mr. Morten Sand, a former FIDE Vice President and legal advisor, is the company’s international counsel.

Tromsø beckons

“Being elected the host of the Chess Olympiad in 2014 is a major ambition for our city”, says Tromsø mayor Arild Hausberg. “We promise the chess world a unique experience combining expert and experienced organizing skills in a friendly and exciting environment. If we win the bid, we guarantee a memorable event that will please both participants and the local population. A comprehensive cultural program will be an integrated part of a Chess Olympiad in the City of Tromsø,” the mayor concludes.

With 75,000 inhabitants Tromsø has all the amenities of “a small large city”. Tromsø has a relatively mild climate, and is just a three-hour flight away from London and Frankfurt, and less than two hours by air from the Norwegian capital, Oslo. Tromsø has a very active chess community and hosts an annual international festival, the Arctic Chess Challenge, in August every year.

IM Alexander Ipatov wins Sofia blitz

IM Ipatov takes clear first in qualifications and final
Report by chessdom

Alexander Ipatov, the young talented International Master who is commenting the match Anand Topalov live at Chessdom.com, convincingly won the Sofia Blitz open tournament. After gaining first position in the Swiss system qualifications on Wednesday, today he managed to finish a full 1,5 points ahead of the competition in the 17 rounds final.

If he manages to convert the energy he has into ELO points, we will soon be seeing him climbing up the chess rankings.

In the tournament participated also the winner of the parallel open – IM Drenchev, the strongest Bulgarian player U16 IM Kiprian Berbatov, the women national team player WIM Elitsa Raeva, and the Chessdom Challenge Cup 2007 participants – Sasho Andreev, Darena Sirkova, and FM Hristo Velchev, as well as multiple local strong blitz players.

GM Shulman’s WC comments

Former U.S. Champion Grandmaster Yury Shulman turns 35 today. He was born on April 29, 1975.

He recently shared with us some of his thoughts about the World Championship match between Anand and Topalov:

As for the predictions – I do not like to make those – although I would like Vishy to win again.

Home field is always an advantage (But having a sponsor for the match is also a great deal of work for the Bulgarians!)

Such age difference is irrelevant but the physical shape is important.

The age vs. experience is always a question. The experience is like a crutch – it helps one to walk, but prevents him from running!

Thank you Yury and on behalf of the chess fans, happy birthday!

World Championship Strategy

So far, Anand has been successful in obtaining the type of positions which he is comfortable with in this match. What is even more important is he was able to obtain positions which are uncomfortable for his opponent.

Anand is a universal player. As we can clearly see in game 2, Anand was able to hang on to a small positional advantage and waited for his opponent to make inaccurate moves then capitalized on it. In game 3, Anand was very patient in getting his pieces, one at the time, into play to hold as Black (Bf5, g6, h7, g8, f7, e8, d7, etc.). In game 4, Anand demonstrated his ability to attack and calculate.

So what must Topalov do to come back in this match? There are still 8 games left but he must start to employ the right strategy. An all out risky assault may work in one or two games in the match but it will not work for the long haul. So if you are Topalov’s strategist, what would you advise him?

I will offer my opinion later on.

So earns World Cup berth

Wesley So settles for 2nd, earns World Cup slot
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Posted at 04/29/2010 5:26 PM Updated as of 04/29/2010 10:16 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So made a quick draw over Chinese GM Zhou Jianchao in the final round of the 9th Asian Individual Chess Championships on Thursday to secure a seat in the 2011 Chess World Cup in Khanty-Mansiyk, Russia.

So split the point with Zhou in 14 moves of the Berlin Opening or less than 10 minutes of play to finish in a tie for 2nd to 5th places at the Subic Exhibition and Convention Center in Subic, Olongapo City.

“I’m happy to make it to the World Cup again,” said So. “I really wanted to finish the tournament unbeaten, but I committed a slight mistake and he (Ni) was quick to capitalize.”

So finished with 6.5 points on 5 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss in the 9-round tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). He, thus, earned one of the 5 slots for the World Chess Cup.

GM Ni Hua of China, who dealt So his only defeat during the 7th round on Tuesday, topped the tournament with 7 points. He took home the top prize of $6,000.

Ni also quickly drew with GM Abhijit Gupta of India in the final round.

Joining Ni and So in the Chess World Cup are Gupta, Zhou and GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, who also tallied 6.5 points. So, Gupta, Zhou and Le each received $3,625.

Le clinched the 5th and last berth to the World Chess Cup by defeating GM Liren Ding of China.

Biggest revelation

The biggest revelation in the Asian Chess event was national junior standout Jan Emmanuel Garcia, who beat GM Saleh Salem of the United Arab Emirates to finish as the second best Filipino performer with 5.5 points.

The incoming 3rd year Ateneo de Manila high school student finished 17th overall.

The 14-year-old Garcia, a mainstay of the V. Luna Chess Club, also earned an International Master (IM) norm for his showing in the tough, 95-player tournament which had 32 Filipino participants.

GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr., meantime, settled for a draw with Xiu Deshun of China to finish with 5.5 points just like Garcia.

Antonio finished with 2 wins and 7 draws and wound up 21st after the tiebreak. He and Garcia pocketed $820 each.

IM Oliver Dimakiling trounced GM Eugene Torre, GM Darwin Laylo drew with Chinese Wang Li, GM John Paul Gomez halved the point with Vietnamese GM Dao Thien Hai, and IM Oliver Barbosa downed Chinese Chen Wang to lead a big group of players with 5 points.

Women’s game

In the women’s division, woman Grandmaster (WGM) Atousa Pourkashiyan bagged the title with a nine-round total of 7 points. She earned $3,000.

Pourkashiyan, seeded 12th in the 24-player field, drew with 2nd seed WGM Zyongyi Tan of China.

IM Wang Yu of China and woman FIDE Master (WFM) Ding Yixin of China shared 2nd to 3rd places with 6.5 points.

Top seed Wenjun Ju of China, meanwhile, finished with 5 points.

Spectacular improvement!

Since the SPICE program started a few years ago, it has been growing and expanding at warp speed.

Through the special training program for the Texas Tech Knight Raiders chess teams, the 13 active members of the A team, B team, and women’s team gained nearly 1,100 rating points in just this short time! That is an average improvement of nearly 90 rating points per player!

This is the reason why I keep on pushing the idea of proper training for young people! If they are taught the right way, they will improve in chess.

Spending quality family time

Family spends quality time playing chess
By Cain Madden The Natchez Democrat
Published Thursday, April 29, 2010

NATCHEZ — A family chess dynasty is emerging on Union Street.

And there are chessboards the family has won in nearly every room of the house to prove it.

Maya Vollmer, 15, and siblings Quinn, 13, Henry, 11, and Tess, 9, all compete in chess tournaments, both local and state, along with their parents Jeffery and Rachel Vollmer.

All of the Vollmer children have been playing chess since they were young, but Maya was exceptional, Rachel said.

“We have pictures of Maya as an infant in front of a chess board,” Rachel said. “By (age 1), she knew how the pieces moved and by (age 3) she could play.”

Part of the reason Maya and Quinn like playing so much is because it gives them quality time with their father, who leaves home early and gets in late because he works in Baton Rouge.

Jeffery said he plays every night, and if one of his children is interested, he will set up chess puzzles for them to figure out.

“They can usually find the result,” he said. “We have a good time together, and it is not spent mindlessly, like watching TV.”
