Gomez returns to solo lead

Gomez returns to solo lead in Battle of GMs
By Roy Luarca
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 21:48:00 05/31/2010

Filed Under: Chess,Philippines — Dresden Olympian John Paul Gomez extracted the full point at the expense of Fide Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the seventh round on Monday to regain the solo lead in the Phoenix Petroleum 3rd “Battle of GMs” at the Character Hotel here.

Gomez forced Garcia to resign in 60 moves of the Pirc Defense and jumped to 6.0 points, half a point ahead of two-time champion GM Wesley So with four rounds to go.

“I was lucky to pull it (victory) off,” said Gomez, who persevered against Garcia as they both have two pawns and a bishop of the same color.

Gomez, a mechanical engineering graduate of De La Salle University, eventually forced the 14-year-old Garcia to resign with a threat of mate or a pawn promotion.

So was even luckier as he escaped with a draw against International Master Rolando Nolte after 68 moves of a King’s Indian Defense.

Handling black, So gave up a bishop and a knight to launch an attack on Nolte’s kingside.

Nolte defended well, however, and parried the threat as So blundered on his 33rd move. Nolte missed the winning line on the 40th, though.

So eventually managed to grab Nolte’s lone pawn and forced the draw with his rook against Nolte’s rook and knight.

Other games saw GMs Rogelio Antonio and Darwin Laylo agreeing to a draw after 19 moves of the Sicilian; IM Ronald Dableo beating IM Oliver Dimakiling in 35 of the French Defense: and IMs Richard Bitoon and Julio Catalino Sadorra splitting the point in 70 of another French.

Antonio, who lost his sixth-round match to So by default, remained third with 4.5 points.

MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, Jr., dominated the first Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Harry Angping Cup rapid chess championships in Pasig City over the weekend.

The twelve-time RP Open champion Antonio, defeated US-based International Master (IM) Julio Catalino Sadorra to capture the Open division title and the top purse of P50,000 in the two-day event held last Friday and Saturday at the PhilSports Arena (formerly ULTRA).

Antonio, the reigning ASEAN blitz champion, toppled Nhatz Loyaga, Samson Lim, Jr., Christian Arroyo, Conrado Diaz, FIDE Master (FM) David Elorta and FM Jan Emmanuel Garcia.

He settled for a truce with top seed GM Wesley So in the 7th round and GM John Paul Gomez in the 8th round before beating Sadorra in the 9th and final round to finish with 8 points in 9 games of play.

So, meantime, defeated Garcia in the final round to finish among the 2nd to 4th placers together with IM Rolando Nolte and NM Alex Milagrosa. They tallied 7.5 points apiece. Garcia was stuck at 7 points and dropped to a tie for 5th to 9th places in the company of IM Emmanuel Senador, Pascua, Elorta and Sadorra.

Bulgaria vs ChessBase

Disclaimer: I do not know enough about the details to comment on this case. However, I hope it can be resolved amicably for the good of chess.

Precedent in chess history, chess moves copyright violation goes in court Danailov shares details about the case
Presented by Chessdom

During the Anand – Topalov WCC 2010, a message appeared on the official site stating, “Warning! It is absolutely prohibited the live broadcast of the moves or video during the game on other websites, media or software without the explicit permission of the organizers of the match. This prohibition is being violated by ChessBase”

A few weeks after the end of the championship Chessdom.com received news directly from a German source that the case is already presented in court. Regarding the moves copyright case and the recent exchange of media releases between teams Topalov and Anand, we contacted the manager of Veselin Topalov and one of the central figures behind the organization of the WCC – Silvio Danailov. He was disturbed by the fact that millions of euros were invested in the most watched online World chess championship in history, while Chessbase is putting themselves above the law and taking the moves without permission. Read on for full details:

Q: Mr. Danailov, we understood that the case against a German company that has presumably violated copyright rules has been presented in court. Can you share with us details on the issue?

A: Good afternoon, yes, this is true. Before the start of the World Chess Championship we explicitly stated that no company can use the moves without the official site’s staff permission. And this was violated by Chessbase, they put themselves above the law in Europe, above the general FIDE ethical rules.

Q: Until now there is no such similar case in chess history. Do you believe it will be successful?

A: I believe in European law and in our Attorney who is presenting the case – Mr. Rainer Polzin. What’s more, I am candidate for President of the ECU and as such I have to stand behind the rights of professional chess. Such actions, as the one by the German company Chessbase, affect the sponsors of events negatively, which damages sponsorship, from there future organization and level of events. In the long run the biggest damage is made on the chess fans, who are the most important part of the game – they certainly deserve to enjoy high level events and have chess sponsorship on all levels.

Thus, by defending our rights through European law, we will be defending all fans and the future of chess.

Q: Our information states that the case entered court on May 27th, that is way after the end of the event. Why was it not presented after the first rounds?

A: In such proceedings there are steps to follow. We tried to reach an agreement with Chessbase and offered them to follow the rules all other sites were following – a commercial contract. They refused and started transmitting the games. A warning letter was sent to them after the first games, requesting immediate stop of broadcast. But such action was not taken from their side, so the case is now in court.

Everything is very technical and there are many details. In the modern age of communications this process is easy to trace, the amount of work is big though.

This was the most watched chess championship online in Internet in the history of all championships. For all this to happen the sponsors paid, but Chessbase can take the moves for free, and resell to their clients ? This is not normal, by law and by human norms. In simple language this is robbery. And for such actions there will be consequences.

Q: As we mention the World Chess Championship, the last interview that we had a few days ago reached mainstream media in many countries including India. The manager of Anand, Mrs. Aruna Anand, answered in TOI before we had the chance to talk to her.

A: First of all let me clarify one thing: with all my respect Mrs. Anand is not a manager, she is a secretary. Manager is a very serious profession, the manager promotes and popularises chess , looking for sponsorship money and organizing world class events. Basically what she is doing is pick up the phone, send emails, faxes, booking tickets, etc.

About her reaction, it looks to me a little bit nervous, but what to do, the truth hurts sometimes.

So, Gomez lead Battle of GMs

So beats Antonio, returns to leader board in Battle of GMs
By Roy Luarca
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 21:03:00 05/30/2010

TAGAYTAY CITY, Philippines — Two-time champion Wesley So got a free ride to the top Sunday night, winning by default over Grandmaster Rogelio “Antonio” Jr. and catching up with erstwhile solo leader GM John Paul Gomez after six rounds of the Phoenix Petroleum 3rd “Battle of GMs” at the Character Hotel here.

So, only 16 but the country’s No. 1 player the past two years, raised his total to 5.0 points, tying Gomez, who settled for a draw with fellow Dresden Olympian GM Darwin Laylo in the 11-round tournament offering P200,000 to the men’s champion and P50,000 to the women’s titlist.

Although Antonio appeared at the venue, he requested that his game with So be postponed as he was not feeling well after ruling the two-day Philippine Sports Commission Chair Harry Angping Cup that ended Sunday.

Tournament director Willie Abalos, however, did not accede to Antonio’s request and declared him loser by forfeiture, citing a ruling that a player must appear on the board at the time of the match.

With the forfeiture, the second-seeded Antonio got stuck at 4.0 points and must score on each of the remaining five rounds to stay on track of repeating his runner-up finish to So in 2009’s edition held in Dapitan City.

Laylo, on the other hand, improved to 3.5 points as the four GMs continued to tow the 11-man field in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by Prospero “Butch” Pichay in cooperation with the Tagaytay City government through Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.

Laylo and Gomez decided to split the point after just 16 moves of a Slav with neither player wanting to deviate from the book line.

Giri vs. Hammer for the title

Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament

GM Stellan Brynell comments round 4.

The last round of this year’s tournament will provide us with an encounter for first place between Anish Giri and Jon Ludvig Hammer. This was the outcome of the results in the fourth round. Giri will have the white pieces and is therefore slight favourite to win the tournament.

The fourth round was more peaceful than the previous ones and included two draws.

The first pair to finish was Jonny Hector and Anish Giri. Hector chose a well-known drawish variation in the Four Knights Opening. Although he didn’t play the most cautious move (9.Qe2 instead of 9.Be2) it soon became obvious that the game would end in a draw.
Pia Cramling played an aggressive game against Nils Grandelius and castled queenside in the eleventh move. Grandelius probably didn’t react in the best manner and if Cramling had played 14.Bc4, she would have had the same position as in the game but with the light-squared bishop on c4 instead of f1 (after 14…Bf5 15.Nxd7+ Bxd7 16.g4) which is a huge improvement. After the game continuation Grandelius obtained counterplay on the queenside and Cramling was forced to make a draw.

The game between Jon Ludvig Hammer and Tiger Hillarp Persson reached the Paulsen Variation of the Sicilian in a roundabout manner. Hammer’s 7.Qe2 is rare and Hillarp’s reply was probably incorrect since it allowed Hammer to play e4-e5 a few moves later. Hillarp tried to free his passive position with 17…f6 which was probably ok, the big mistake came one move later when he decided to avoid the exchange of queens on g2. After this, White could penetrate Black’s position and only a couple of moves later the attack on g7 could not be defended. Hillarp had to surrender material to avoid immediate defeat but Hammer had no problems in securing the win soon afterward.

It’s your move, IOC

It’s your move, Jacques
By Alan Hubbard
Sunday, 30 May 2010

The chairman of Russia’s Olympic Committee reckons it is time chess was added to the Olympic programme. Alexander Zhukov says he will be putting pressure on the IOC president Rogge for its inclusion, adding: “Regrettably, the IOC doesn’t want to add that sport to the Olympic programme, but we will insist.” Seems Mr Zhukov, a Kremlin cabinet member, is making the sort of offer that sounds more in keeping with the Russian mafia. It is to be hoped that it will be refused, even if there are some who would like to see the Games become more cerebral. But if they ever allow chess, where will it end? Scrabble? Backgammon? Poker? How about a spot of Sudoku? If squash can’t get in because it apparently lacks televisual appeal, what chance should chess have?

Local Chess Mates Challenge Grand Master
By KGNS News

Story Created: May 29, 2010
Story Updated: May 29, 2010

If you think you can play chess…you can try testing your skills against the four-time Women’s World Chess Champion. About 40 chess players from Laredo and Nuevo Laredo went head to head with Grand Master Susan Polgar today. It happened at the Harmony Science Center Academy. They’re trying to promote the game here in our area. And Polgar, who once played the legendary Bobby Fisher, says she’s happy to help.

“Chess is a wonderful hobby as well as it keeps the mind fresh for the young. It develops the mind, and for the old, it keeps the mind fresh. It’s great for bonding, it bridges gaps in generation, and crosses all boundaries and genders,” says Susan Polgar, Chess Grand Master.

Tomorrow morning, Polgar will give a lecture to players; and, at 10 .m., there’s a blitz open to the public. You can reserve your spot to play by calling Steven Wright at 237-4886.

Akobian and Najer Lead in Chicago

After five rounds of the strong Chicago Open, GMs Varuzhan Akobian and Evgeny Najer lead with 4.5/5. 16 players trail with 4/5, including GMs Michael Adams and Loek Van Wely.

FWC Khalifman speaks out

Disclaimer: As a matter of fairness, I will publish articles, letters, and information from both parties when I receive them.

Another former member of the 2700 club, GM A. Khalifman, Former World Chess Champion shared his views on the upcoming FIDE Election:

May 28, 2010

“Which side are you in the dispute between A. Karpov and K. Ilyumzhinov?

– “I do not have any specific preference at the moment. Maybe, because I don’t know the situation very well. Everything is taking place in Moscow and I am in St. Petersburg. But, I think that the criticism addressed to the incumbent President is deserved. However, things are not black and white when describing this situation. There are pluses and a few minuses in Ilyumzhinov’s work.

The other thing is that the great chess player Anatoly Karpov has no program in the election, which does not inspire any confidence or trust. In fact, instead of a program, he is just making promises. Words, words, words… It is absolutely not clear what the future holds for us.

With Ilyumzhinov, when problems arise, he reaches in his own pocket, gets money and solves them. With Karpov, it is absolutely unclear for me how he would solve the problems. He is referring to some sponsors, and keeps repeating: “there will be sponsors, there will be sponsors..” But, he does not name a single specific sponsor.

Why is this such a great mystery? I am at a loss. “

Costly temporary insanity

Temporary insanity costly to Topalov
Saturday, May 29, 2010 02:50 AM

Most of us pay at least lip service to the golden mean.

Moderation and consistency usually maximize returns in the long run whether it be in business, love, sports or games such as chess.

It is a cliche of performance psychology to talk about the importance of “staying within oneself.”

Such behavior has been the bread and butter of Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov. A fierce and uncompromising fighter, he is, above all, a realist who excels in appraising situations with admirable objectivity.

But in the final game of his recent match for the world title with Viswanathan Anand, Topalov stepped out of his paradigm and astonishingly self-destructed to lose the game and match.

Egregiously playing to create winning chances with a series of ill-advised moves when the nature of the position offered no more than a draw, Topalov was crushed.

After the game, Anand acknowledged: “I honestly thought he had gone nuts.”

But Topalov, who held the world title from 2005 to 2006, was as redoubtable as ever.

“I really committed suicide, but I don’t feel sorry,” he said. “My confidence is still really strong because I didn’t feel I was outplayed here.”
