TUSCALOOSA | Results are in for the 2010 Alabama State Chess Championship held at the University of Alabama on Sept. 17-19.

Emory Tate of Midway claimed the state title by winning the Open Section. Tate, a Life Senior Master, won five matches, with another ending in a draw, to best second-place

finisher Ronald Burnett of Tennessee, also a Senior Master, who had four wins and two draws.

The state tournament included a Reserve Section for players with U.S. Chess Federation ratings less than 1,500.

A one-day tournament for children in grades K-12

also was held during the state competition and drew 140 participants from around the state.

The event was organized by Freedom Chess Academy with support from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation, the Alabama Chess Federation and other Tuscaloosa organizations and individuals.
