This was game 2 of the 1974 World Championship Candidates Match in Moscow, Russia. The winer of the tournament would get the chance to play for the world title in 1975. Karpov opens with e4 and Korchnoi responds with the Sicilian Dragon. Karpov plays the extremely aggressive Yugoslav Attack, a line involving opposite-side castling and violent attacks. Korchnoi plays a topical line with 12. …Nc4 to exchange white’s strong bishop on b3, however this maneuver costs him valuable time to start his own attack against white’s king. Karpov sacrifices a pawn with 14. h5 to open the h-file, and proceeds with a fantastic prophylactic plan involving 16. Nde2! and 19. Rd3! – entirely preventing black’s attacking ideas revolving around an exchange sacrifice on c3 so that white can direct his full attention to the kingside. Karpov finishes the game with a sharp tactical sequence, sacrificing another pawn to open lines against black’s king. Korchnoi was unable to defend and resigned after 27. Qh8+, in light of 27. …Ke7 28. Nxd5+ Qxd5 29. Re1+.

Karpov attempts to avoid excess complications in the opening by fianchettoing his kingside bishop, although black is able to quickly create counterplay with 7. …c5 and 8. …e6. An unusual knight maneuver (10. Nec3!?) by Karpov achieves solid control of the center. Kasparov plays actively with 13. …Bd4!? and Karpov is forced to create a mass of complications beginning with 14. a5!? Black had achieved a solid position with dynamic counterplay, however in time-trouble Kasparov dropped a pawn with 25. …Qf6? (better was 25. …Qa6). Kasparov had one more chance to salvage the game, however he blundered in severe time-trouble 32. …Bc1 33. …Nd3+ and 34. …Bc2 – allowing white to easily promote his past d-pawn.

But now the former glamour model is attempting to do something which most people of sound mind would probably advice against; to bring together the biggest group of KP fans ever so that she can break a world record for the largest book singing by a single author.

The current champion for this bizarre record is chess player Anatoly Karpov who managed to sign 1,951 copies of his book in 8 hours. Katie obviously wants to do one better than that when she releases her new tome The Comeback Girl and has also promised to print the name of every fan who attends the event – which will take place on July 27th at the O2 Academy – in the front of her next book.

Speaking about the record attempt Katie (who looked very much like Barbie to Leandro’s Ken when we spotted them out in London yesterday) said:

I love meeting my fans and I can’t wait to make them part of this world record. I really hope they will come out to support me in Leeds on 27 July and as a thank you I’m going to dedicate my next book to them and print all their names in the front.’

Guess where we’ll be on July 27th? That’s right – anywhere other than Leeds.
