The US Senior Open Returns to Boca Raton

At the closing ceremony of the 2010 US Women’s Championship, Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield announced that the Boy Scouts of America approved Chess as the next Merit Badge for development.

At the 2010 US Women’s Chess Championship, Tatev Abrahamyan, 22, was awarded this year’s $1000 9queens/goddesschess Fighting Spirit Award. Women’s World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk judged the award.

Sevillano Triumphs in Agoura Hills

CCA’s 15th Pacific Coast Open attracted 203 entries. The 30-player Open section featured two GMs and four IMs, with one of the latter, Enrico Sevillano, finishing on top with a 5-1 score.

Today the vote count concluded for the 2010 USCF Special Exective Board election to fill two vacant one-year Executive Board seats. Mike Nietman and Gary Walters were elected.

As IM Irina Krush was wrapping up the US Women’s, the US Junior Closed saw an unlikely tie, creating a three-way tiebreak between GM Ray Robson, IM Sam Shankland and Parker Zhao. Armageddon playoff, Tuesday at 11 AM EST.

GM Nikola Mitkov won the 2010 Chicago Class with 4.5/5, giving up a draw only to GM Dmitry Gurevich. Timur Aliyev took clear second place.

In the US Women’s, Zatonskih stays a half-point ahead of Krush and Abrahamyan as they all won their respective games. In the US Juniors, Zhao lost for the first time in the event to Holt and now Robson and Zhao tied for the lead.

Liou Leads the 2010 Cadet Championship

Yian Liou of California Leads the Cadet Championship in Crossville with 3/4. Half a point behind is Michael Yang from Minnesota.

IM Anna Zatonskih defeated WIM Iryna Zenyuk and is now leading the US Women’s with 4.5/5. In the Junior Closed, Parker Zhao continues to surprise, and holds the lead with 4.5/5, a full point ahead of Yang and Robson.

Kislik and Naroditsky Earn IM Norms in Hungary

As previously reported on CLO, Daniel Naroditsky earned his first IM norm at the July First Saturday tournament. FM Erik Kislik of the US earned his third norm at the same event.
